Getting to know your pro shop team |
Colin Fairweather
PGA Advanced Professional, Club Manager Diploma. Turned Professional at 17.
World ranking - not found haha!
One Professional victory - Edinburgh alliance at Prestonfield in a terrible condition. Cleaned up that day. The organiser never had the trophy that week, said he give me the week later, but unfortunately passed away. Never got the trophy to this day!!!
What did you do prior to working at Longniddry? I left Stevenson college at 17 after resitting my A-levels knowing full well, the result was not looking good. Luckily as I walked home one day early, I spoke to the Assistant Professional at Ratho Golf Club, saw they were looking for an Assistant Pro, had an interview two days later and the rest was history!!
Best golfing memory
I’ve got two!
I worked at the Volvo PGA for PING Golf in 2004 for practice and all 4 days. Coached at the end of the range for PING Golf alongside the top players and had access all area passes for the whole event. So, we coached spectators and Volvo clients then on last day watched final days play inside the ropes. It was a great experience alongside a good friend of mine Scott Porter, Head Pro at the Dorsett resort. Gave us a close up view of a big golfing event.
Qualifying and playing the Scottish PGA event at Dalmahoy GC back in the 90’s. It was a real big event back in they days, televised, roped off fairways, crowds. It was a great experience and something I had really tried for a few times. The previous season I had got an alternate space after coming through a big playoff only to not get a spot, so it was a good experience to play with my brother Ewan on the bag. Favourite golf course you have ever played?
I have played many great courses of the years, in many countries. From the West Course at Wentworth the day after the Volvo PGA, to the Blue Monster in Doral. I think my favourite right now is Royal St Georges in Sandwich. I have played it many times, its such a fantastic place to play with all the history of the Open Championship. I love playing them links courses. Still got Muirfield to play!!
Best shot ever hit?
In the Scottish PGA 2nd round after shooting 74 1st round which I was quite happy started 5, 4 first two holes. 3rd hole in was good par 4. My tee shot was decent enough but caught the tree up the right hand dropped down leaving me a lengthy shot. I hit a 5 wood into the green with a slight draw, landed perfect and run up to 6 feet. Rolled the putt in to pick a shot up. In this tournament we told the official our score walking off each green, which was then radioed back to the main scoreboard by the clubhouse.
Fairweather goes par, par, birdie!! My friends turned up to watch and saw on the main board, thought I was making a charge!! It was short lived, got on the bogey train and had 5 in a row, eventually shooting 78. Not good enough, missed cut, but it was a great event to play in, and my Mum and Dad watched that day. By complete luck he was videoing me that day and recorded this particular shot. Its in the vaults forever!!!! What clubs do you use?

I am shortly going to upgrade my clubs. Going to have a fitting at Craigielaw and get fitted to some more up to date Titleist clubs.
Dream fourball?
It would definitely be Seve as he is one of my favourite players and I watched him live many times. Monty would be next, fantastic golfer and I have bet on him loads over the years, another one of my favourite players. Last place, I would probably ask my brother, Gullane member off 4. Think me and Ewan would have taken Monty and Seve on haha!!!
Why do you like working at Longniddry?
My Grand parents had a house in Gullane by the par 3 course where I learned the game. I have been coming to East Lothian for many years, so it’s a dream to work in this fantastic area. Longniddry in my view has such potential, so its my aim to work hard to achieve this potential. I always dreamt of working in East Lothian, so I am delighted with the opportunity to do so. I smile each day as I look out over the first tee to the view!!!

Unplayable Ball
A player May Decide to Take Unplayable Ball Relief Anywhere Except Penalty Area, the player is the only person who may decide to treat his or her ball as unplayable by taking penalty relief under the rulings 19.2 or 19.3.
General Relief For relief for an unplayable ball relief is allowed anywhere on the course, except in a penalty area. If a ball is unplayable in a penalty area, the player’s only relief option is to take penalty relief under Rule 17.
Relief Options for Unplayable Ball in General Area or on Putting Green The player may take stroke-and-distance relief under Rule 19.2a even if the original ball has not been found and identified. Although to take back-on-the-line relief under Rule 19.2b or lateral relief under Rule 19.2c, the player must know the spot of the original ball.

75 yards? Up-and-down for me... |
The majority of golfers know how far they hit their driver and irons with a full swing, but wedges require you to be a lot more accurate if you want to start shooting better scores. So, whilst it can be useful to know how far a full PW or LW goes, you'll benefit far more from dialling in your wedges so you can hit specific distances that you regularly find yourself with on the course. |
Give yourself options You'll notice that different swings with each wedge will result in yardages that overlap - see table above. This is important as it'll give you options when considering the conditions. For example, if you're facing a strong breeze, we'd suggest going up a club and utilising a shorter swing so the ball flies lower with less spin, helping it to penetrate through the wind. |
Dial in with Mizuno We'd recommend having a wedge system of the same brand and model, so you remove any variables in feel and spin across wedges. One model that we love is Mizuno's S18 wedge. On shorter shots, we’re more likely to miss the sweet spot high on the face as we open it up – which is a cause of inconsistent spin - so Mizuno has made the S18 thicker higher into the blade to even out the spin rates on those common miss-hits. |
