Tour news

The Honma Hong Kong Open

The 2018/2019 season started last week at The Honma Hong Kong Open where Englishman Aaron Rai led from start to finish. It was a very impressive performance to claim his first European tour event.

It was a good start to the season for local man, David Drysdale who finished in the top five after just keeping a hold of his card a few weeks ago. The four scots, who graduated from the challenge tour last season all made the cut in their first event, which made it a positive start to the season for Scottish golf and let’s hope this continues.

The Match

Over the pond, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson competed against each other in the big “match” in Las Vegas. The winner earned $9 million and all money won on side bets went to both players chosen charities.

It was Phil Mickelson who won on extra holes at the 22nd hole. Playing 22 holes of golf, he earned $9 million and contributed $600,000 to charity. Not a bad afternoons work!

Competition news

Turkey Trot

A reminder to everyone that on Saturday 22nd December, we will be having a Christmas Turkey Trot where we ask everyone to get in the festive spirit and wear your favourite Christmas jumper or hat. There will be an individual stableford competition with prizes up for grabs.

We hope everyone will take part in this event as it will be a really good day at the club. The Pro Shop team will be also be dressed in their favourite Christmas attire!

Matts high school coaching

This week, Matt went to Preston Lodge to give second year pupils an opportunity to try the game. This will be a weekly occurrence moving forward as we try to get more juniors involved from an early age.

It’s a great thing for Matt to do and we hope to see more juniors around the club in the future.

Rule of the week

As of 2019, there will be a change to the way a player can drop the ball. Last year it was proposed that golfers could drop from any height above an inch. This has been changed to knee height.

So, from Tuesday 1st January 2019, when taking relief, golfers will now drop from knee height – no longer shoulder height.

When the chips are down...

As seasons change, so too does our beloved golf course. Winter leads to softer fairways and greens, meaning there's less roll out on your shots; as a result you may have noticed your chip-and-runs aren't giving you the tap-in putts that you're used to. Here's our advice:

The key to fixing this is adjusting your landing zone. When the greens are softer, you need to make sure that - if you take the same club as normal - you land the ball closer to the pin as shown by the red circle, due to the fact that the ball simply won't roll out the same distance as it would in the summer (as shown by the blue circle).

Alternatively, you could take a less lofted club and keep the landing zone the same - the lower loft will ensure the ball has more roll out on the green.

These tips will have you making more up-and-downs during the winter, ensuring your handicap continues to drop along with the temperature!

Divide and conquer

Sometimes in golf, it's the little things which really grind your gears. Take golf bags, for example - the game can be difficult enough when you're not playing your best, but it becomes downright frustrating when you go to take one club out of the bag and the whole set decides to come out with it. It goes both ways, with sometimes just trying to slot a single club back in proving difficult and time-consuming.
